Makeup doesn’t last forever ladies. It does have an expiration date. Depending on the type of makeup will determine when it should be tossed. Items that are in a powder form, such as eye shadow and blush, can last the longest, usually 2 years. Besides the fact that old makeup doesn’t hold up as well, if you’re not careful, it can even be harmful to your skin and cause irritation. Many packages now come with a little symbol on the back of the product that will tell you how many months it’s good for once it’s been opened.
Of course, if you ever come down with an infection in your eye, throw away all of your eye makeup that you were using 2-3 days prior to the infection. If not, you risk spreading this infection once you use those products again. And hold off on wearing makeup in that area until the infection has healed.
If you’re the type to use your fingers to apply your makeup, then please make sure you are washing your hands well before, during, and after you’ve applied your makeup. You should also make it a habit to regularly sanitize your makeup to prevent spreading bacteria (you can make your own sanitizer in a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and a little water).
Bonus tip: Throw out mascara when it becomes dry, and don’t add water or saliva to it, the FDA warns. Both can add bacteria to the product, which could lead to eye irritation or infection.
